The Red Turtle

Not one word is spoken during “The Red Turtle”, an animated movie by Michael Dudok. It’s a fascinating piece of cinema that shows the cycle of life in a way that really hits home. The way in which the story, the animations, the sound design and the music come together on screen is simply stunning.

The consistent musical theme of the movie gave me a sense of transience. A feeling conjured mostly by the classical voice that cuts to the bone and perfectly captures the different emotions. I loved how the cello plays along with the melody carried by the voice, playing the role of nature, and eventually taking over the tune completely. A composition that seems to suggest nature will always win in the battle versus mankind.
